The Secrets of the Game…

At what age do we show kids the secrets?

The secret of getting over the gain-line
The secret of ball presentation
The secret of quick ball

When should are coaching delivery become centred on these habits?! These are fundamentals, the earlier we give them to the kids the better they will become. The benefits are exponential. If young players learn [...]

Do you Drop-Kick? I like to Drop-Kick…

Why its great to knock over a Drop Kick:

Gets the crowd going.
Keeps the scoreboard ticking over.
Offers another option in attack that the opposition must cover.
Often they can scored be from nothing, like Bob’s effort above.

Its a fine skill, yet rarely coached. Surprising considering how one goal can turn a game, as [...]

The Captain…

Is there still a place for the traditional captain in professional rugby? Total Flanker’s post concerning traditional captaincy got me thinking.
At Schoolboy, Youths, and adult Junior rugby the role of captain has been largely untouched. Lead by example, inspire your players, act as the link between the coaching staff and the players; airing [...]

Innovate or Die…

Most of the [...]

How to prevent coaches from coaching or even wanting to coach

Has anyone seen this? How are we meant to develop coaches with crap like this? Someone has actually just scanned a handbook from the 1970’s and drawn in a few stick man.
Funnily enough the info on nutrition and strength training is spot-on and quite helpful, yet the skills section is beyond awful. It [...]

Captain Johnno and Two Planks

Have you ever met Martin Johnson? Have you ever played with Martin Johnson? More importantly, would you play for Martin Johnson? I have never met Martin Johnson. Bar Superbowl Sunday, two Lions tours and the Mary McAleese affair of Havelock Square, Eskimo has had little or no contact with him. Yet, all the same, Martin [...]

The Who?

Ok, first off. We like to think that we are innovative and forward thinking. We are positive, we are passionate, we want to make the game of rugby more exciting for the crowds, more enjoyable for the players. We have high and mighty ideas about how the game should be played, what it should represent [...]
