At every level, from mini rugby to tag to schoolboys to semi-pro to full test matches, a player’s technique is the defining factor in executing a an action or skill. With this in mind, what is the biggest error a player, regardless of standard, makes in technique?
It has to be the eyes. It has to be vision. The most common unforced errors, such as missed tackles, dropped-balls and balled-up lineouts are down to vision and the lack of it.
Young players, when leading into the tackle, often fall off midway through because their eyes drop off the target and fall to the ground. Eradicate this practice and you eradicate missed tackles. Get the player to keep his eye completely on the target. His head will follow and his feet will plant themselves closer to the target, making for stronger contact.
Its a mental thing, its a coachable thing. Its a small thing that will make a big difference.
